LAS 17 (Short Film)
Based on a true story, a young, pregnant Salvadorian woman finds herself handcuffed to a hospital bed after suffering a miscarriage.
Las 17 is a movement. They are the seventeen Salvadorian women who were imprisoned for having a miscarriage, and eventually released thanks to their brave lawyer, Dennis Muñoz; a character I plan to introduce in the feature film, as Christina Quintanilla becomes his first client. He goes on to help numerous other women who have been stripped of their freedom due to an accident they could not have controlled.
I had the incredible opportunity of interviewing Dennis Muñoz, getting to know him, and learning his side of these events. I am incredibly passionate about sharing this very real story. Our short film is only the start. I am motivated by the challenge to create a narrative piece that will bring audiences closer to the characters and truly engage them in their experience. As a filmmaker/artist whose goal is to have a life-affirming impact, I strive to inspire education, to inspire change, and to inspire hope.
A woman is a woman is a woman. My intention is to provide a voice. This is not about taking a pro-life or pro-choice stance. It is shining a light on injustice in order to promote basic human rights. Men and women both share equally in this struggle, due to a lack of education and access to health care. Now more than ever, this story needs to be told.
